ACL Survivor Guide: Part 3 - Getting There

by

You’re all packed and ready to go. Now all you need to do is figure out how to get there. Here are a few options:

  • Ride your bike. If you can ride your bicycle, you’re golden. ACL provides a ton of well-lit bike racks outside each entry gate. You are responsible for bringing your own locks.
  • Taxi. If you’re staying in town, a taxi could be a viable option. Unfortunately, the demand is high during ACL Fest so you may have a wait on your hands. ACL has provided a designated area for Taxis to drop you off.
  • Take the Shuttle. Each year ACL provides a free shuttle service. This year, as with last year, you will catch the shuttle from Republic Square at 4th and Guadalupe. The shuttles begin at 10 am and make their final return from the park at 11 pm, Friday-Sunday. Don’t be intimidated by the line, it moves surprisingly quickly.
  • Get Dropped Off. According to the ACL Website - “The passenger drop-off area is at the north end of the Mopac (Loop 1) Pedestrian Bridge on Stephen F. Austin Drive. The pedestrian footbridge runs underneath Mopac. This is the closest drop point to the Festival grounds. It is a short walk across the footbridge. Access the drop off point by entering Stephen F. Austin Drive from the east. This is the only official drop off point. It’s quick and easy. For safety reasons, please don’t attempt to drop off passengers at other areas near the park.” Of course the easier drop off point would be at Republic Park. Then you’d just take the shuttle!
  • Parking:
The ACL Fest Website gives a lot of information about where not to park but they don’t give much advice on where you should park your car to catch the shuttle. If you’re driving your car into town, parking can be a bit challenging. There will be NO on-site parking at the festival itself with the exception of disabled parking and those are on a first come-first serve basis and you must have a State issued placard.

Forget about parking in the neighborhoods surrounding Zilker. Access to those neighborhoods will be heavily restricted. You can find parking spaces around Republic Park, but you’d better be there early because they will fill up fast! Click here for a list of parking lots and garages in downtown Austin. Friday will probably be trickier than Saturday or Sunday because people will still be working. On the other hand, it’s also the most laid back day of ACL with a much smaller crowd I had a great deal of luck last year parking directly across the street from Republic Park at the City Hall parking garage. It cost me a whole $5 a day. You could spend all day driving around looking for a free parking space. If you see a parking garage anywhere near Republic Park that is going for a good price, my advice would be to take it. Quickly!
