It’s Texas, it’s summer and it’s HOT! Looking for a way to cool down this weekend? Then here is an events just for you:

2nd Annual Ice Cream Festival
When: August 9th, 2008, 10:00am - 7:00pm
Where: Waterloo Park
$$$: $2.00

Presented by Amplify Credit Union, the 2nd annual Austin Ice Cream Festival is an event centered around family, fun, and ice cream which hearkens back to a time when ice cream trucks roamed the streets and running through sprinklers was an art form. While having a great time, we’ll also be raising money for local charities, such as the Austin Children’s Shelter and the Young Womens Alliance.

Here is an event for those of you wanting to get your caffeine on:

Coffee Cupping at Caffe Medici
When: August 9 2008, 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Where: Caffé Medici, 1101 West Lynn
$$$: Free

Coffee cupping, or coffee tasting, is the practice of observing the tastes and aromas of brewed coffee. A standard coffee cupping procedure involves deeply sniffing the coffee, then loudly slurping the coffee so it spreads to the back of the tongue. The coffee taster attempts to measure aspects of the coffee’s taste, specifically the body, acidity, and balance.

Austin InkFest & Piercing Convention
When: August 8-10, 2008
Where: Austin Music Hall, 208 Nueces
$$$: $15 per day and $25 per weekend pass, Under 12 Free

Austin Ink Fest 08 will feature live entertainment by THE ENIGMA as well as side shows by Texas Ink and the Human Suspension Show as well as live music by various performers. Additionally, they will be crowning Ms. Ink Fest at 7pm on Saturday night.

Capital Confectioners Day of Sharing
When: Sunday, August 10th
Where: Lion’s Club, 500 N. Railroad, Pflugerville, Tx
$$$: $45 at the door

A Day of Sharing is something that is unique to the sugar art community. Decorators share their techniques unlike many fields where this kind of sharing just does not occur. Cake decorators are more than willing to share with each other and that is what a Day of Sharing is all about. It is a full day with demonstrations from 9 am to 5 pm and a great chance to meet fellow decorators. The demonstration schedule includes:

Two Sweet Sisters - Diamonds are Forever
Glenda Galvez - Pearl Edged Bows
Susie Rasmussen - Airbrush Techniques
Yvette Humbert - Cowboy Cakes
Jacque Benson - Beautiful Teacups
Sallia Bandy - Building Mechanisms into Your Cake

This a great line-up of demonstrations by very talented decorators. You won’t want to miss it! A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Classic Gamer Expo
When: Sunday, August 10th
Where: 10am-5pm. Norris Conference Centers, 2525 W. Anderson

For all your old-school gaming needs. Expect a lot of Atari paraphernalia.

Shannon Leigh Lewis: They Call Me Warrior

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

I was saddened to hear of the death earlier this month of one of Austin’s brightest slam poets, Shannon Leigh (Lewis), at the tender age of 20. Shannon was in Florida at the time of her death, swimming and diving with friends. According to the various reports I’ve read, she was experiencing some equilibrium problems and swam back to the cave entrance alone. A diving instructor from another group found her unconscious and assisted in bringing her to the surface. Shannon was taken to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida where she slipped into a coma. Shannon lingered in a coma for several days with no signs of brain activity before being removed from her respirator. Her death has rocked the tight community of slam poets who had known Shannon from the time she entered slam poetry at 14 years old.

I had the privilege to see Shannon Leigh perform two years in a row at the National Poetry Slam here in Austin. Shannon was a petite woman with a bold voice. She spoke of tough topics in an eloquent and thoughtful way. She toured the country giving voice to those who were unable to do so themselves. Victims of war, rape and poverty became real to those who heard her speak.

Shannon’s friends and admirers will be gathering at Ruta Maya next weekend to give tribute to Shannon. If you’ve never listened to slam poetry, do yourself a favor and attend. If you’re already a fan, you won’t want to miss it! Here is the flyer with more information:

Saturday, August 2nd @8pm
Ruta Maya World HQ
3601 S. Congress Ave
$10 Minimum Donation

For more information on Shannon’s death, read Michael Barnes’ article on Austin 360.

mailboxnews.gif

I’m very excited to announce that the May/June edition of Mailbox News, a cake idea magazine, has just arrived and with it a bit of a surprise! Inside is a 4-page spread on the Capital Confectioners “That Takes the Cake” 2008 Cake Show. Four pages. We are just so pleased.

The evening will begin with the presentation of diverse visual art to a live music background. Many artists of diverse mediums and influences present their pieces individually and collectively; consequently, with their art becoming a part of the whole event layout. The night of this Midtown extravaganza provided by Spider House will continue with the sultry cabaret performances of some of Austin’s most gorgeous women, to the musical prowess of some of Austin’s best bands. Electronica, Funk, Rock, Jazz are just some examples of variations within, and are sure to create an optimal aesthetic experience.

Texas Ren Faire calls for Auditions!

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Auditions

The Texas Renaissance Festival, the nation’s largest, most acclaimed renaissance themed park, seeks interactive character actors and specialty acts for its 2008 Performance Company.

Entertainers of all types are needed to fill various roles including nobility, fairies, barbarians, puppeteers and peasants. Two new character groups have been added for this year, a Halloween-themed Transylvanian court and a group of Christmas elves (requiring actors of diminutive stature). Previous stage experience is helpful but not required. Bilingual actors are especially welcome. Specialty acts (musicians, jugglers, singers, dancers, etc.) may also audition at this time.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, May 3rd and Saturday, May, 10th. The May 3rd auditions will take place at the Shenandoah Meeting and Convention center, near The Woodlands, north of downtown Houston, Texas. The May 10th auditions will take place on the grounds of the Texas Renaissance Festival, 21778 FM 1774 in Plantersville, Texas.

Auditions are by appointment only and must be scheduled in advance. To schedule an audition, call the TRF office at 800-458-3435, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information visit their Auditions Page.

SXSW hits Austin

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

sxsw.jpgIt’s that time of year that many Austinite’s dread and some anticipate. SXSW has arrived in Austin. SXSW, for those of you not familiar with it, stands for South by Southwest and it’s one of two big music events that takes place in Austin every year. The other being the Austin City Limits Festival, better known as the ACL Fest. These two events, more than any others help to define Austin as the music capital of the US. It also bogs down traffic and clubs.

SXSW is more than just a music event, though. SXSW incorporates music, film and media. Where ACL Fest takes place in Zilker Park, SXSW takes over downtown Austin. There is a trade show that takes place at the Austin Convention Center. There are bands performing at some 80 stages throughout Austin and films showing at Alamo South Lamar and the Alamo Downtown locations as well as the Dobie and the Paramount. For those of you who don’t live in Austin, these are some of the coolest theaters you’ll ever have the privilege to attend.

One of the biggest misconceptions about SXSW is that you have to purchase a badge/wristband to participate. While a badge would certainly be nice and would allow you to see a lot more, you can see a lot for free and for a little bit of money you might see something great. Last year, for example, my youngest brother saw Lyle Lovett for a mere $10 at Stubb’s.

Here is your Film Guide. You can purchase a film pass for $70 from Waterloo Video. Having a film pass guarantees you won’t have to purchase tickets at the theater but you can purchase any available tickets for $10 fifteen minutes prior to the start of the film. If you’re on a budget just show up and try to get in for $10. It’s generally easiest to get into shows during work hours on the weekdays. Same goes for bands. After hours and weekends will obviously be more crowded. Check out Slackerwood’s excellent guide to participating theaters and how best to park and get around.

Make your own SXSW Schedule. For a list of music venues and their schedules check out Imeem’s No Badge Required guide. The beauty of SXSW is that you can have a lot of fun and not spend a ton of money. In addition the range of music is extraordinary. This year we have music talent ranging from R.E.M. to Dolly Parton. Really! Doesn’t that just blow your mind? As an alternative you should also check out the Austin Showlist.

Get out there and enjoy SWSX, even if you don’t have a fortune to spend! Lastly, here is a music venue and hotel map and a Film venue map.

For a really helpful guide, check out SXSX Baby!

Sustainable Living in Austin

recycle.jpgCelebrating Sustainability at the Austin Hostel!

Did you know Austin has a hostel? Me, either! Not only do we have a hostel but we apparently have a pretty nice one! HI-Austin, which stands for Hostel International, Austin, is located on the shore of Town Lake, giving it a nice peaceful feel. Guests are footsteps away from local bus lines, hiking and biking trails and the Colorado River. They also offer excellent amenities such as a kitchen, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, free parking, movies, and lockers for every guest. Hi-Austin is recognized as a “Sustainable Living Center” and has visitors from up to 35 countries each year.

A 10 minute journey could take you to the middle of the Red River music district, to the stylish hub of South Congress, to the cool waters of Barton Springs Pool, or to the natural beauty of the Austin Greenbelt. Our fun and friendly staff would love to give you some ideas of what to do in town and directions on how to get there!

For over 20 years the Southwest Texas Council of Hosteling International has provided an environmentally and economically conscious home for travelers visiting Austin.

This year, HI-Austin has teamed up with several environmentally conscious, local organizations such as Ecology-Action, Austin Carshare, TreeFolks, Ten Thousand Villages and The Natural Epicurean Academy, among others; to provide a casual party in celebration of sustainable living in Austin. Food donated by White Mountain Foods, and music by Austin’s favorite The Lennings.

Food donated by White Mountain Foods & and Music performed by Austin Favorite band: The Lennings. Winnie from our school with possibly another student, will be rolling sushi to teach and market to the community. Just a casual drop by event and hopefully we’ll have great weather to be outdoors as well! All welcome and free of course!

Recycling your Christmas tree in and around Austin

Friday, December 28th, 2007

recycle.jpgThe holiday is over and now you’re stuck with a big tree and wondering what to do with it. The obvious choice is to recycle your tree!

First things first, strip off all your ornaments and lights and remove the tree from it’s stand. Are there really people who don’t do that? Secondly, if your tree is over 6ft tall, cut it in half.

  • Trees can be dropped off at Zilker Park until January 6. The trees will get crunched down into mulch so they don’t wind up in landfills.
  • City of Austin Solid Waste workers will also collect all trees with yard trimmings on regular scheduled collection days, where they are recycled along with yard trimmings and composted with sewage sludge to make Dillo Dirt. Pay-As-You-Throw Customers: Christmas tree recycling couldn’t be any easier! Simply remove the stand and ornaments and place your tree at the curb by 6:30 a.m. on the same day your recycling is collected.
  • Austin area residents who live outside the city limits, in apartments or don’t have curbside pickup can also drop off real trees at the Austin Community Landfill on Highway 290 East and Giles Road through Saturday January 5 for recycling. The mulch made from the trees will be donated to Austin Habitat for Humanity for landscaping material.

The City of Austin Needs Your Help

    Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

    AustinGo.jpg

If you’ve ever been to the City of Austin website, you’ll know that it’s in serious need of revamping. Several months ago I was looking for information on homelessness in Austin and my search took me to the City of Austin website. The information on the page I found was over 4 years old. I don’t need to tell you how bad that looks to visitors. As we all know, the first step toward improvement is admitting you have a problem. That’s just what the City of Austin has done and furthermore, they want Austinites to participate in the re-design. That’s a smart move. If you want people to use your website, it’s a good idea to involve them in the design and it’s a great idea to find out what they want from your site.

To facilitate the re-design, the City of Austin has created a survey. To participate in the survey you may either fill out a paper form, available at several municipal locations, or you may take the online survey. The survey is even available en español.

I took the survey and it took less than 5 minutes to complete. They will ask you what things you would find useful on the upgraded site so it might be a good idea to look over the current site and have a think about what works and what doesn’t work. This is your opportunity to make a local government site more useful so don’t miss out on the opportunity.

In addition to the Web usage survey, focus groups and town hall meetings are planned for early 2008 to further collect public input and ideas for the new Web site and its services. The survey will ask you if you wish to participate.
