Salt Dough Ornaments

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

When I was a kid we often made our own ornaments for the Christmas tree. We also sat around with huge bowls of popcorn and cranberries and made our own garland. That’s something I never see these days. I wonder if it’s because parents are scared to give their kids a needle and thread. As protective as parents are these days you might think it’s a miracle that kids from my generation survived their childhood. We did all sorts of things that would be considered too dangerous these days. I can recall riding in the back of my Grandpa’s truck to the apple orchard and standing in it to pick pluck the apples off the tree as he slowly drove through the orchard. Occasionally I’ll see people riding in the back of a pickup these days and even I feel a slight sense of panic that they’ll be hurled out if the driver suddenly hits a bump or has to break hard.

Anyway, if you’re looking for something fun to do with your kids, why not make your own ornaments for your tree. These also make very sweet Christmas gifts and it’s a very inexpensive project. All you need are cookie cutters, flour, salt and water. If you don’t have cookie cutters you can use a pizza cutter or a butter knife to cut out your designs. Here is the recipe for the dough:

Morton’s Salt Dough Recipe

2 cups (all purpose) flour
1 cup Morton® Salt
1 cup water

Directions:
1. Heat oven to 325° to 350° F. Cover the bottom-sides of the baking sheets with foil and set aside upside-down.

2. Combine the flour and salt in a large flat bottom mixing bowl. Mix a little water at a time while stirring with a spoon to form a ball of dough. Knead the dough in your heavy duty mixer with a dough hook for 4 minutes or by hand for 7 to 10 minutes. The dough should have a firm and smooth texture. Add a little water if necessary. Place the dough in a plastic bag to prevent drying. You can store the dough in the refrigerator for 5 days.

3. Roll the dough out with a rolling pin on the prepared cookie sheet pans. Roll dough to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness. Use the Christmas cookie cutters to cut out the cookies and simply remove the excess dough from between the cookies. Make a small hole with the end of a straw for the hanging ribbon or string.

4. Bake the cookies 1/4-inch thick for 20 minutes, 1/2 inch thick for 40 minutes or until the dough is golden brown. Cool completely.

5. You can use water color or acrylic paints to finish your cookie decorations. Once the paint is dry, apply a coat of polyurethane varnish. Best to paint and varnish cookie decorations on one side, let dry and then paint the other side. You can also glue appliqué decorations on the cookie decorations.

When using cake, candle or gelatin molds, always wipe inner surfaces with a light coat of cooking oil before pressing in the dough. This prevents sticking and leaves a cleaner impression.

Important: Before you begin, here’s a word to the wise. With this recipe for
dough sculpture, you can make all sorts of dreamy creations that look good enough to
eat. Let us remind you that these creations are art, not food. For that reason, we
urge: “Please don’t eat the art.”

Baking Tips

If sculpture puffs up, poke a hole with a pin or toothpick to release air, and reduce oven temperature 50° to 75°. Give special attention to extra thin pieces which tend to bake more rapidly. You might wish to reduce oven temperature. To prevent large, flat sculptures from curling during baking, just weight down edges with a metal tool or heavy object after the surface has cooked long enough to support the weight without leaving indentations. (Test by tapping with spoon.)

To have colored dough just add food coloring or paint in the water before you mix your dry and wet ingredients together.

Help Bring a Child to the Theatre

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

If you’re looking for a charity to donate to this holiday season, consider the Paramount Theatre. No, it’s not the traditional place one might look to for donations but this is a great program. For just $10 you brighten a child’s life and bring them the joy of live theatre. Remember the first time you saw a live performance? Wasn’t it magical? For the relatively small sum of $50 you can send 5! kids to the theatre. All that and it’s even tax deductible.

Here is a note from Ken A. Stein, Executive Director of the Paramount Theatre:

SIX PROGRAMS. ONE GOAL.

Give every child the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by theatre.

Economic times are becoming increasingly difficult for everyone. That’s why I need your support now more than ever to ensure that we can continue to provide a seat at the Theatre to the children who need it the most.

Donate Now - as little as $10 today so that no child loses the opportunity to attend the Theatre.

More children than ever are relying on your generosity, including 25 at-risk children and their families who will be attending the Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis Holiday Show on Thursday, December 11, 2008 from Wonders & Worries.

These children will get to see this show because of the generosity of patrons like you, and because of our strong partnerships with area non-profits who participate in our Youth Outreach Program.

These underserved children have seats at the Paramount Theatre for all of our shows and I don’t want to lose my ability to continue that promise for years to come.

Give a child the gift of theatre by making a donation of as little as $10 today!

P.S. Even $10 makes a big difference. Last year, nearly 40% of donor support for this program came from gifts of $20 or less.

What’s Up Austin: The Weekend Line-up for 11/22/08

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

I am freezing today. I stepped out this evening to go bowling with friends and it actually smelled like winter outside. I put on socks and shoes today, leaving my sandals behind. I’ve got the urge to bake, too, which is also a sure sign of winter for me. I’ve heard this from several of my female friends. That’s not something you generally hear from men. Is this something we inherit from our mothers or is this some sort of internal clock?

The countdown toward Christmas is on, too. Thanksgiving is so late this year. I bet the retailers are chomping at the bit for the arrival of Black Friday. I spent Thursday working at the Junior League of Austin’s “Christmas Affair”, which I have to say, is spectacular this year. This holiday market is being held at the Palmer Event Center and is jam packed with every kind of vendor you could imagine. There is jewelry, art, food, novelty gifts, toys and more. In the center is a huge Christmas tree in the shape of the Eiffel Tower. I’d highly encourage you to pack up the family or grab a friend and go enjoy the shopping!

JLA’s Christmas Affair
When: November 19 - 23, 2008
Where: Palmer Event Center
$$$: $10 plus parking ($7) or shuttle from Barton Creek Mall for $3

Come get syruped up and bask in the warm glow of Austin improv!!

TRIANGLE TREE-LIGHTING
When: Saturday, Nov. 22nd, 5-8:30pm.
Where: The Triangle, 4700 Guadalupe.

This family-friendly evening features performances, crafts, and a big jolly guy in a red suit. All this leading up to a tree-lighting. Proceeds go to Operation Blue Santa.

On Sunday you won’t want to miss a great opportunity to help end hunger while filling your belly with warm soup served in beautiful bowls. Potters from all over Texas donate hand made bowls of every size, shape and color. Restaurants and bakeries all over town donate soup and bread. Musicians donate their time and talent. Your part is to show up, pick yourself a gorgeous bowl for which you’ll pay a mere $15. Your bowl will then be filled with a delectable soup. You’ll grab yourself some bread to go with it and kick back and enjoy the entertainment. The Empty Bowl Project is part of a nation-wide effort to raise money, awareness and to end hunger. Proceeds for this project go to the Capital Area Food Bank’s Kids Cafe Program. The Austin Empty Bowl Project will be held at the Mexican American Culture Center at 600 River Street in Austin, just off the hike and bike trail on Lake Ladybird, November 23, 2008. Get there early to pick out the coolest bowls!

The seventh annual E.A.S.T. event celebrates the visual arts in east Austin. This year, 250 artists will be opening their studios throughout the east side for a free two-day event. E.A.S.T. began in November 2003 as an artist-run initiative designed to highlight studios and galleries located in east Austin. It has grown by leaps and bounds but retains its original mission—to encourage creative dialogue among artists and their peers, as well as between artists and their city. E.A.S.T. is a self-guided tour. Maps to all the studios will be provided, and visitors can use the E.A.S.T. website and catalog to select which studios they would like to see. There are Capitol Metro bus routes throughout east Austin as well. Visit capmetro.org for routes and times The E.A.S.T. Tour Guide—a full-color book showing the work of every artist—will be available for free throughout Austin during the weeks leading up to the tour. Capital Confectioners November Newsletter

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Greetings Cakesters,

I don’t know about you guys but October was sure a busy month around here. We had Lorraine McKay’s workshops, the Texas ICES DOS in San Antonio and of course, Cake Show planning and more Cake Show planning! With the holidays now swiftly approaching, I don’t think things are going to slow down any time soon!

That Takes the Cake! Show News

The mini-class schedule and mini-class instructor registration are both now online. We are feverishly working to bring the competition registration online next. Vendor registration has been online for a while now. If you know of an instructor or vendor who would be a good match for the cake show, please send them to our website.

Registration is also open for our Celebrity Classes. If you sign up before the 26th you can still break your payments up over 4 months. Each month you’ll have one less month to make payments so sign up early for the lowest monthly payments.

Debbie Brown’s class pictures are now online. For one class the members of Capital Confectioners voted for Debbie’s Indian Wedding Cake, a marvel of stacked pillow cakes atop a golden base and topped with the Indian elephant god, Ganesh. For the other class we chose the fabulous Persian Palace Cake pictured to the left. Choosing between these classes is sooo hard!

Sign up early for low monthly payments!

Lorraine McKay Workshops

Bride & Groom Teddy BearsLorraine’s workshops were a huge success. Everyone left with fabulous pieces and and feeling like they’d been on a vacation. We kept Lorraine’s husband, Andy, busy running back and forth to Round Rock Donuts. We had two pregnant ladies and wouldn’t you just know it, those babies were calling out for our famous RR Donuts. No one else was complaining much either, for that matter. In fact, everyone had so much fun that we’ve convinced Lorraine to return next year for our DOS. We’ve set the date for Sunday, August 16th, 2009 and we’re working out the classes now. Lorraine will be teaching her Bride & Groom class again, only this time the Groom will be sporting top hat and tails instead of a kilt. We’ll let you know when registration opens.

ImageMembers of Capital Confectioners traveled to San Antonio to the ICES “Christmas Wedding” DOS last month to support our fellow cake friends. The DOS was organized by Texas ICES representatives, Jacque Benson, Yvette Humbert and Irene Hackbarth. Many excellent techniques were demonstrated including some Halloween favorites like a witch and easy marzipan pumpkins!

Carol Fouts stayed on to teach her wonderful Sugar Shoes class, the next day. If you haven’t taken one of Carol’s classes, I’d highly recommend one. They make the most adorable baby shower cakes and her high heels make great ladies cakes as well as bachelorette cakes.

A special thank you to Carol Ann Hughes for her invaluable assistance and to everyone who made an effort to attend.

Tip of the Month: Cleaning your cake dummies

ImageIs removing the old fondant from your cake dummy making you crazy?

Here is a tip from our own Miss Janette Pfertner, Master Decorator and Sugar Artist.

To clean a cake dummy, remove all the flowers and decorations and then stick it in the dishwasher. The dishwasher will remove all the fondant and leave you with a clean and sterile cake dummy for your next project!
