Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

If your least favorite part of Thanksgiving is cooking the bird then why not buy it cooked this year? There are several stores and restaurants that will do all or part of your holiday cooking for you. It’s easy, convenient and a lot less messy!

Giving at Thanksgiving

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

It’s that time of year when we pause to reflect on how lucky we are to have roofs over our heads and food in our stomachs. With that realization comes a desire to give to those less fortunate. Here are some ways you can give back to your community this holiday season:

The Empty Bowl Project
Sunday, November 23rd, 2008
Mexican American Culture Center
600 River Street, Austin, Tx
11:00 - 3:00pm

This is such a cool project. Potters from all over Texas donate hand made bowls of every size, shape and color. Restaurants and bakeries all over town donate soup and bread. Musicians donate their time and talent. Your part is to show up, pick yourself a gorgeous bowl for which you’ll pay a mere $15. Your bowl will then be filled with a delectable soup. You’ll grab yourself some bread to go with it and kick back and enjoy the entertainment. The Empty Bowl Project is part of a nation-wide effort to raise money, awareness and to end hunger. Proceeds for this project go to the Capital Area Food Bank’s Kids Cafe Program. The Austin Empty Bowl Project will be held at the Mexican American Culture Center
at 600 River Street in Austin, just off the hike and bike trail on Lake Ladybird, November 23, 2008. Get there early to pick out the coolest bowls!

Operation Turkey
Operation Turkey began in 2000 as an means to promote community outreach during the Thanksgiving holiday. If you love to cook, or are willing to package up or deliver food on Thanksgiving Day, or if you just want to donate, your help is always appreciated. 2008 ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot
Thanksgiving Day - November 27, 2008, 9:30 a.m.
Waterloo Park (12th & Trinity)

The Annual Turkey Trot is a great way to burn off some calories, get some exercise before the big meal and give back to your community. This event benefits Caritas of Austin, a non-profit organization that provides for those experiencing poverty that begins with a safety net and links them to resources to achieve self-sufficiency. Last year’s Turkey Trot raised $115,000 and over the last 17 years, the race has raised well over $600,000 for Caritas. Choose the 5k run or the 1 mile walk.

Chuy’s Children Giving to Children Parade 2008
Saturday, November 29th, 2008

It is a true urban festival in the middle of downtown, where fans can get a burger from Spider House, some Brisket from Lamberts, a beer from a Club de Ville bartender, a pair of vintage boots from Big Rig, and T-shirt from their favorite band. A fest WE in the scene would want to go to, without all of the ‘filler’ that tends to show up at the corporate music carnivals around the world these days. Oust Dunbar!

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

We have a cockroach on our State Board of Education. That cockroach has a name, Cynthia Nolan Dunbar.

In an article she wrote for the Christian Worldview Network website, Dunbar wrote that a terrorist attack on America during the first six months of an Obama administration “will be a planned effort by those with whom Obama truly sympathizes to take down the America that is threat to tyranny.” “I sincerely believe that an Obama Administration would ultimately mean one thing - the end of America as we know her,” said Dunbar, one of board’s seven social conservatives.

“However, unlike Joe, I do not believe this attack will be a test of Obama’s mettle. Rather, I perceive it will be a planned effort by those with whom Obama truly sympathizes to take down the America that is threat to tyranny,” Dunbar wrote. “What nobody seems to be discussing is the fact that if such an attack takes place, what about Martial Law? What happens to expand executive power when a state of civil disorder is declared?”

She expressed fear for the potential demise of this country should voters elect Obama. Dunbar even repeated the already discredited idea that Obama was not born in the US which has been proven untrue.

“I shall take no joy in saying ‘I told you so’ if Obama gets elected. But just for the record, remember, ‘I told you so,’” she wrote.

While I absolutely believe in Freedom of Speech I find this kind of talk coming from someone on our State Board of Education to be intolerable. As Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network said:

“No matter who you support for president, we should all be able to agree that Ms. Dunbar’s disgusting attack is a shocking example of the extremism that has infected the state board,” Miller said. “It’s stunning that a board member who helps decide what Texas children learn in their public schools would say something so disgusting and reprehensible. She should be taking refresher courses in civics and good citizenship, not deciding what Texas kids learn.”

In fact, the Texas Freedom Network, a watchdog group that monitors the board, released a public statement on Monday asking Dunbar to retract the statement. Did she? Of course not! “I don’t have anything in there that would be retractable,” said Dunbar, R-Richmond. “Those are my personal opinions and I don’t think the language is questionable.”

Dunbar also alleges that Obama “most likely” is not a citizen, repeating Internet rumors that have been refuted by Hawaii officials.

This woman is an elected official and while the Texas Freedom Network is calling for a retraction, I’ll go one step further and call for her dismissal. A retraction will only cause the cockroach to crawl back under the cabinet and play safe.

Now in it’s 14th year, the Hairy Man Festival is a benefit event that raises $20-35k a year in non-perishable food and cash for local charities. The festival includes an arts and crafts area with numerous artisans participating. There are special performances and live music by local groups and organizations on the Festival Stage. Judged by local community leaders, the festival closes out with the legendary ‘Hairiest Man’ contest. Not to mention a $500 prize for the hairiest man!

One of my favorite events is happening this weekend. It starts on Friday and that’s a great day to go because there are less people in attendance. If you love jewelry and all things sparkly, don’t miss this event. You’ll be absolutely amazed at how inexpensive gems are when you buy them unstrung. You’ll find aisles and aisles and more aisles of every imaginable gem and many you’ve never even heard of before. From loose gems to mounted gems, they’ve got it all going on! With exhibitors from around the world, this is the largest selection of jewelry you can find under one roof.

Music lovers, have I got your event for this weekend! The music and related memorabilia available here, at one time, is larger than anywhere else in the US. Ranging from the 78’s of the 1930s to the latest compact discs of today, over one million 78s, 45s, LPs, CDs, cassettes, posters and collectibles (probably even a few 8-track tapes!) are in the auditorium. Over 300 different dealers from all over the USA and Europe are spread out over 50,000 square feet of floor space. The show is so big that to see everything takes most of the weekend, so if you’re in a hurry we have search announcements at 12, 2, and 4 o’clock from the concession area to help in locating specific items. Again, go Friday if you can, for the least amount of foot traffic.

What’s up Austin: The Weekend Line-up for 9/27/08

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Thank goodness the weekend is finally here! It was a busy week for me. Of course the big news this weekend is ACL Fest which kicked off today. My youngest brother is in town from McKinney, Tx and my best mate is also in town from England. The two of them have been at ACL all day and will be there until closing on Sunday night. At this point, if you don’t already have a ticket, your only options are Craigslist or purchasing a single day ticket for Sunday. Every other day is currently sold out. I’m sitting out ACL Fest this year but I can’t wait to see what my brother and friend have to say about today’s events. I would have loved to have seen The Killers, who were today’s closing act. You can catch many of the festival bands playing around town this weekend so if there is someone you particularly want to see, check around!

7th Annual Austin City Limits Festival
When: September 26-28, 2008, 11:00am - 10:30pm
Where: Zilker Park, Austin, TX
$$$: $80 for a Sunday pass

In place of ACL, I went to the 2008 Quilt Show today with Jennifer Bartos, owner and operator of All in One Bakeshop. I went in part to see the quilts but I also went because the show was being held at the Crockett Center which is where my cake club will host our 2009 Cake Show. The Austin Area Quilt Guild is 30 years old this year and it really shows in their organization and attention to detail. We were very impressed with how they managed traffic, how well the vendor booths were laid out and how they managed to direct the flow of traffic inside the hall. There was a wonderful array of gorgeous quilts and I encourage you all to go see the show. See 350 quilts, a judged show, exhibits, demos, a kid’s area, a gift boutique, and a silent auction.

ACL: 48 Hours to Go, I Want to be Sedated!

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

With just 48 hours to go until the opening of the 2009 ACL Fest, I’m sure the crowds have already begun arriving. Last year I wrote a fairly comprehensive Survival Guide but here is some useful information.

Wristbands:

As of today, the Zilker box office is OPEN. You can beat the crowds and redeem your 3-day passes for a wristband between now and Thursday between 3pm-8pm. Wristbands must be worn for entry into the park. Children 10 and under are free when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Having your wristbands means you can slip into the wristband-only lines and cut down significantly on your wait. If you are unable to get your wristband early then you can redeem your tickets for a wristband at either entrance.

Zilker Box Office
2201 Barton Springs Rd
Austin, TX 78746

On Barton Springs Road, across from the Festival entrance.
Week-of Hours: Mon. 9/22 - Thurs, 9/25, 3pm-8pm
Show Days: Fri, 9/26 - Sun, 9/28, 10am-10pm

Transportation & Parking

I must stress to you that there is NO on-site parking. There are lots of bike racks so biking in is a great option. Otherwise you’ll definitely want to use the Shuttle. The Shuttle is FREE and you can catch it at Republic Park. Republic Park is located at 5th and Guadalupe. That, of course, means you need to find somewhere downtown to park your car. I had a great deal of luck parking across the street from Republic Park last year at the State Garage. Another Fri-Sat city office parking garage that works great is the one at South First & Barton Springs Rd. Park there and you can just walk to the festival. Those won’t work too well for Friday as people who work will be parked there but on Saturday and Sunday it’s open and ran me $5 a day. Extremely reasonable. Cap Metro will be picking up at various locations around town and you can visit their website for information on their routes. Here is a list of Downtown Austin parking garages. Parking will generally run you $5-10 a day. You also have the option of taking a cab or if you have a relative or friend who has pity on you then you might beg them to just drop you off. Click here to see the Cap Metro bus schedule.

Need a good laugh? Alamo Drafthouse has got you covered. Over the past year or two, YouTube has been filling up with groups of people performing the zombie dance from Michael Jackson’s Thriller. There are videos of newlyweds performing that choreography as part of their first dance together at wedding receptions, and of course there’s the clip of the 1,500 inmates of the Cebu Prison in the Phillipines. We were watching those videos last winter and thought to ourselves, “What if we could make that even more awesome?” This fall, that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

They’ve joined forces with Ines Markeljovic, a dance teacher and founder of ThrillTheWorld.com, to help her complete her task of setting a Guiness World Record for having the most people around the world doing the Thriller dance at the exact same time. For the past seven months, they’ve been hosting Michael Jackson Sing-Alongs at the Alamo Ritz, then following the music video orgy with two hours of dance instruction that gets everyone in the crowd up to speed on how to do the Thriller dance themselves. They’ve partnered with local theater groups, dance companies, and schools as well, and they’re convinced that when it comes time to participate in the Thrill the World dance, on Saturday, October 25th, they’ll have more people in one place than anywhere else on the globe!

Michael Jackson: THRILL THE WORLD Sing-Along!
When: Sunday, September 21, 2008, 7:00p
Where: Alamo Downtown
$$$: $12.00

Go forth and learn how to Thrill.

Also, Fantastic Fest is going on this weekend at the Alamo. Fantastic Fest is a week-long festival featuring the best in new science-fiction, fantasy, horror, animation, crime, Asian, and all around badass cinema. The event was created to offer exposure to genre films which are often overlooked by the traditional festival circuit. We strive to offer acquisition, media and exhibition opportunities for undistributed films as well as to spotlight upcoming genre theatrical releases and give audiences a chance to see 35mm prints of repertory classics.

Well, those are my picks for the weekend. It’s going to be in the comfortable 80s this weekend. Roll on fall!

What’s Up Austin: The Weekend Line-up for 9/13/08

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

I was out and about today. That was a mistake. Every place I went was crowded. You’d think there was a hurricane headed our way. Heh. I was in Pasedena, Tx earlier this week taking a cake decorating class with Debbie Brown. I’m very glad I got out of town Wednesday night. At the time they didn’t think the hurricane was going to hit Galveston, which I was very close to, but now we know differently and Galveston is looking scarier by the minute. My poor brother, who lives in Miami, has had a hectic hurricane season so far but he is relieved the pressure is off them for a while. Having said that he’s concerned for the 15-25 million estimated people still in the Galveston are.

There were a lot of schools and businesses that let out early or were closed entirely today. I think half of Houston and Galveston are in town, too. They also canceled this weekends football game with Arkansas. I’m going to go ahead and list weekend events but I don’t know at this point which, if any, will be canceled.
