karate.jpgWhat: St. Elias 75th Annual Mediterranean Festival
When: 6pm-12mid., Friday, October 5, and Saturday, October 6, 2007
Where: 11th Street, Red River to Trinity.
$$$: $5 donation, can be purchased at all 48 Twin Liquor stores
They are taking a whole city block for the festival this year. The renowned foods of Lebanon, Palestine, Greece, and Eritea.
Gyros, Kibbee, Rolled Grape Leaves, Baklava, and Spanokopeta are only the beginning as you feast outdoors on delicacies from the Orthodox world.

Note: Is anyone else amused that tickets for a church fundraiser are being sold at Twin Liquor?

What: Gruesome Gardens
When: Oct. 6-31, Fri.-Sat., 7pm (plus Sun.-Wed., Oct. 28-31).
Where: 2730 S. Congress Ave.
$$$: $9.
The Great Outdoors nursery has been transformed into a terrifying landscape of fearsome sights, sounds, and smells to get you started early on your Halloween-season adventures.

What: 1st Annual Manor Book Fair & Cultural Arts Festival
When: 11 a.m-5 p.m., October 6, 2007
Where: Jenny Lane Park, Manor, TX (104 E. Rector St.)
$$$: Admission is free, but they are asking for a $5.00 donation for adults.
Celebrating art and spoken word. They will have food, cultural exhibitions, face painting, free desserts, giveaway prizes, and special presentations!

What: 1st Annual Sol Fest ATX
When: 2pm-2am, Saturday October 6th
Where: The Compound, 1300 E. 4th St
$$$: $10 ($5, advance)
A day of live music, dance, visual art, short films, poetry, and spoken word, with participating artists including Johnny Ramirez, Alex Chapa, Jennifer Nowzaradan, Rodrigo Quintanilla, Stephanie Cerame, and many others.

What: Austin Martial Arts Festival
When: October 6-7
Where: Crockett Events Center, 10601 N. Lamar, 288-7288.
$$$: $15, day ($8, kids 5-12).
Many martial arts, from all over the world, are represented in Austin. This year’s event will feature Ninjutsu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, Judo, Shuai Chao, and Wing Chun, as well as others. Along with the competitive events, there will be many seminars, demonstrations, and booths.

What: Fall Concert in the Park
When: 7pm, Sunday, October 7th
Where: Zilker Hillside Theater
$$$: Free
Bring a picnic supper, spread a blanket under the pecan trees, and watch the stars come out as the band showcases music as big as all outdoors.

What: Buda 4th Annual Fine Arts Festival
When: Saturday 10/06 (12:00PM) - Sunday 10/07 (12:00AM)
Where: Downtown Buda
$$$:
Held in beautiful downtown Buda. Over 50 fine juried artists featuring oils, pastels, pottery, glass, mixed media, photography and more. Demonstrations, Live Jazz Music, Kids Art Area, Quilt Show, Food & Drinks.

What: Texas Parks and Wild Life Expo
When: Saturday and Sunday, October 6th & 7th, 2007. There will be a shuttle service from Highland Mall (Macy’s side)
Where: 4200 Smith School Road. The entrance is off Burleson Road between Stassney and McKinney Falls Parkway off Highway 183.
$$$: FREE! FAQ
An outdoor experience where visitors fish, shoot, kayak, rock climb, mountain bike, see and touch wildlife, learn about recreation in the Great Outdoors and see and buy the latest in outdoor gear and services. Most importantly, visitors can learn how they can help to conserve this precious resource.

What: 15th Annual Capital City Marching Festival (CCMF)
When: Sat, Oct. 6 from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Where: Tony Burger Stadium, 3200 Jones Road
$$$: Admission Prices: Adults-$6.00; Students, Seniors & Military (ID Required)-$4.00; Children 3 & Under-Free
The CCMF presents the opportunity for bands to prepare for UIL marching band competition. With experienced judges viewing the competition from high above the stadium surface they provide constructive comments, scores, and film thus allowing the band an opportunity to assess what is working well and what needs improvement as the UIL competition season approaches.

The Texas State Fair is also going on until October 21st. If you’re planning to go you might want to check out this helpful article on planning ahead.
